Friedrichshafener Hütte
Austria walking July 2024 Day 4 Neue Heilbronner Hütte to Friedrichshafener Hütte
We must have had a few hours sleep because when dawn came with light through our thinly veiled window, we awoke a little refreshed and ready to get going over the mountains again.
First, at breakfast, we did glare at the birthday group with the duo Tunna stare but the recipients remained oblivious and looked irritatingly awake and healthy after their nights vocal exertions. I’d swear that I could see marks on the table and ceiling where they had been hammering both with fists and steins! Happily though we knew that they were on their way home today so at least we would not be disturbed by them again tonight.
The walk today was set to be fairly strenuous with a 600’ climb over the first mile, a decent of 450’ on the other side of the ridge and then another 900’ up before a steady decent of 1100’ down to the next Hütte. Our fellow Hütte hoppers were intending to pick up the peak diversions that were available along the route whilst we decided that we were perfectly happy to view these from a lower perspective.
The steep climb in the middle of the walk.
Still going…
Made it!
And what a view
Some sketchy clambering down the snow drift on the other side
Life in an infeasible location
And then the ever welcome view of the next Hütte
Where a welcome beer was waiting
The plan to go straight to the hut without visiting the peaks worked fantastically in our favour when it came to bedroom allocation as we were guided to the only room for two in the place. Even better it had two separate beds at standard height. The masonry construction of the Hütte was reassuring and, at last, we were going to get a good nights sleep.
I felt great now and fully immersed into the walking holiday. My limbs were aching but in a good way and best of all, the headache, probably caused by the altitude, that I had been carrying with me since arriving was now very nearly gone. Rest, dinner and bed ended a great day.
